DVD Review: Fantastic Mr Fox is very good

April 5, 2010

I generally hate stop motion animated films. I find the technique distracting and slightly creepy. But I saw so many good reviews for this movie I decided to give it a shot. I am really glad I did. I really can’t say enough about this movie.

Mr Fox is a professional chicken thief. This is a legitimate job in the world of foxes but it is a dangerous one. When Mrs Fox gets pregnant, she tells Mr Fox that he needs to quit and get a safer job. He becomes and journalist. Which he seems quite ashamed of. He feels poor and bored. So he makes the decision to secretly start stealing chickens again. He chooses to steal from the three meanest farmers in the business (Bogis, Bunce and Bean). The farmers declare war and dig up the hill they live in forcing them into the sewer system along with all the other displaced animals. The rest of the movie is about the war between the animals and the farmers.

The plot is not what I found special. I loved the dialogue. So funny. So unpretentious. So unexpected. It assumed the audience was intelligent and observant. It touched on deeper themes of human longing, coming of age, pride, and personal conflict. It did all this without falling into the preachy trap that has killed many a Disney flick.

This is one of those movies that both kids and adults can enjoy.

3.5/4 stars.
