God of the Sabbath

April 18, 2010

Mmmm....my heart is glad.

Many people mistakenly assume Christianity is about asceticism. Do this – don’t do that.  But it is actually not about that at all. It is about freedom. The God of scripture lays out a way of living that allows us to experience the fullness of life. Consider this verse.

Psalm 104:14-15  He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate– bringing forth food from the earth:  wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart.

Here we see that God’s whole creation is a blessing to us. This is seen in no greater way than the Sabbath rest.  On Sunday, Christians rest. God gave us the sabbath rest. Unfortunately, some people consider this to be just another rule….don’t do anything on Sunday. But this is not the point….at all. We pause from work when everyone else keep wasting their lives. Sunday is a rebellion against work. Sunday is reckless. And it is for mankind….not for the sake of a rule.

Mark 2:27   Then he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
