History: Haiti

June 19, 2010

Toussaint Louverture was a military genius. He led the slave revolt. He attended the 'pact with the devil' but upon taking power generally opposed the Voodoo religion and is thought by many historians to have been a devote Roman Catholic.

Christianity Today had this article on their blog today. It is very interesting and speaks of the history of this nation from a religious perspective. Recounts the details of the so-called “pact with the devil” that Pat Robertson famously spoke of in the wake of the earthquake. It is worth the read.

Of historical interest — You can see a clip of Toussaint’s last moments in prison from the award-winning new short film “The Last Days of Toussaint L’Ouverture” at http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2468184/ This film is the basis for a new feature (not with Danny Glover) that is in development.
