Luke 5:31-32 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Think of two people who have been poisoned by a slow acting but deadly chemical. Fortunately, there is an antidote. All the sick person must do is go to the doctor and get the antidote.
But one stubbornly refuses to admit that he is poisoned. When the poison causes his hair to fall out he puts on a wig. When poison causes his skin to go pale he applies bronzer. When it causes him to cough he takes NyQuil. He covers up his sickness. He does not admit that he is sick.
But the other man realizes he is poisoned. He is open about his need for an antidote. He makes arrangements to see a doctor. He gets the antidote and he receives healing. His hair is not as thick as the other man’s (who is wearing a wig). His skin is not as tan as the other man’s (who applied bronzer). But he has been healed. He recognized his need for a doctor.
A central part of the Christian faith is for us to admit our sin before God. The problem is not “the other guy”. The problem is us. When we pretend we are without sin (healthy) we allow the sin that is there to destroy us (even if we are good at covering up). It is only when we recognize our fallen state that Jesus will then lift us up and bring us healing.
