Music: All Creatures of Our God and King
August 4, 2010
One of the things that Christianity offers the world is a beautiful musical history. There is something about the human soul that loves music. Why do we love music? Shakespeare posed the question this way, “Is it not strange that sheeps’ guts should hale souls out of men’s bodies?” Whatever the reason, Christians have throughout our history used music to express our love for God.
Many people that have no use for Christianity somehow find spiritual renewal in our Christian music. I remember hearing that Elvis Presley even when he was in his most decadent stages of his life insisted on listening to only gospel music on the tour bus. Bob Dylan stated that ” I find the religiosity and philosophy in the music. I don’t find it anywhere else. Songs like “Let Me Rest on a Peaceful Mountain” or “I Saw the Light”—that’s my religion.”
This song was written by Francis of Assisi almost 800 years ago. It expressing the Christian belief that all creatures, in their own ways, declare the glory of God. This version is sung by David Crowder.
