The Importance of the Historicity of the Bible

October 16, 2010

The importance of the historicity of the narrative was important to the Israelites. They did not emphasize the spiritual realm. they believed in a physical realm. They worshiped a Creator God who created everything and called it good. They didn’t speak of dying and going to heaven but of dying and being resurrected (read Daniel 12). The idea that God actually acted in history was not a side issue….it was central. As the Jewish people suffered in Diaspora, they reminded themselves through the stories of Genesis, Exodus and the rest that God actually acted in history.

If it was all simply moral lessons coded in neat stories…..they Israelites would have been very disappointed. They were not looking for moral lessons. They were longing for the day of judgment to come from God – in history.
