Are Young People Leaving the Church?
October 25, 2010
One of the things evangelical leaders like to say is “we are losing our young people.” This is usually said right before they try to sell us another book on how to not lose our young people. But the truth is that the youth of America are not fleeing evangelicalism (or Catholicism). Consider the following from Bradley Wright’s very interesting book that reviews Evangelicals and sociological statistics:
Notice that the only group that has lost its young people is “Mainline Protestantism”. This is the old school liberal denominations like United Methodist, Presbyterian Church (USA) and Episcopal Church (USA). The problem is those groups have lost almost all of their people (not just their young). It seems that much of the Mainline Protestants have moved to “Unaffiliated”.
