Cigars and Christian Legalism…

There are two ways that Christians can go off the rails in terms of moralism. The most common way is to be too libertine. Some churches make a living by saying that what is sin is not really sin. These churches tend toward liberalism. Then there is another ditch that one can fall into and this typically comes from the conservative side. This side makes up sins that are not really sins. Some Christians “don’t smoke, drink or chew or go with women who do.” The problem is that smoking, drinking (in moderation) and chewing are not condemned by scripture. And while a woman who is spitting tobacco into a jar might not be appealing to a lot of men, there is nothing in scripture that prohibits association with such a woman.
